Ambulance Sublimit - Don’t Let Ambulance Costs Trigger a Workers Compensation Claim

Ambulance Sublimit - Don’t Let Ambulance Costs Trigger a Workers Compensation Claim

May 24th, 2023

Truckers can benefit from an Occupational Accident Insurance policy to help provide them with financial protection if they experience a serious accident.

A typical Truckers Occupational Accident Insurance policy provides coverage for Medical, Disability, Death and Dismemberment benefits, each subject to its own unique limits up to the Combined Single Limit (CSL).  The most commonly offered limit for Medical expenses is $1 million over the course of 104 weeks.

The policy covers a broad range of medical services, and in certain areas, it can be comparable to Workers Compensation. Nevertheless, insurance carriers will typically set limits on specific services like emergency transportation.

Most Truckers Occupational Accident Insurance policies limit coverage for emergency medical transportation to $1,000 when it is a ground ambulance and $7,000 if utilizing an air ambulance.

One Truckers Occupational Accident Insurance insurer sets an overall limit of $10,000 for the cost associated with emergency medical transportation.

Our Truckers Occupational Accident Insurance policy does not sublimit ambulance expenses!

Ground ambulance services can vary drastically in cost depending on the type and intensity of care needed.  Mileage, staff numbers, and supplies used are all factors that could significantly impact an individual's final bill – with estimates ranging from $1,200 to much higher amounts for more serious cases.

With air ambulance rides costing an average of $62,000 - far exceeding the coverage limits most Occupational Accident Insurance policies provide - access to life-saving care suddenly becomes a financial burden too large for most Independent Contractors.

Why should the Motor Carrier care?

Because Independent Contractors could be liable for significant out-of-pocket expenses if an air ambulance or ground ambulance is utilized, and their Truckers Occupational Accident Insurance policy falls short of the total cost.  This practice, known as "balance billing," may motivate Independent Contractors to pursue Workers Compensation benefits from their Motor Carrier because Workers Compensation does not permit balance billing.
